The Sigourney-Keota Cobra football team looks to add to their four-game winning streak Friday when they travel to Pella Christian for a key district contest with the Eagles. SK is 4-1 on the year and 2-0 in Class 1A District 6, after a 33-7 win over Pleasantville in Sigourney a week ago where they outrushed the Trojans 329-31 and won the turnover battle 2-0, while holding Pleasantville scoreless until the fourth quarter. The Cobras were led by Isaac Bruns 22 carries for 210 yards and four scores. Ike Molyneux added a rushing touchdown, Brady Clark and Ashton Schwab each had five tackles and Bruns and Carson O’Rourke each had a pick. SK is ranked No. 8 in the latest Class 1A poll from the Iowa High School Athletic Association. On the season, they score 30 points per night and give up 15, averaging 281 yards per game on offense, 249 on the ground. Individually, Bruns leads with 96 carries for 697 yards, a seven yard average, with 11 touchdowns. Brayden Wood is seven of 12 through the air for 81 yards, Clark and Ayden Galindo each have touchdown catches. Schwab leads the defense with 20 stops, four for loss. John Berg, Clark and Bruns each have two takeaways. The Cobras rank in the top 10 of 1A in 17 different team and individual stat categories.
Pella Christian is 1-4 this year, 1-1 in district play after falling to Pleasantville 20-13, but rebounding a week ago to pound Eddyville-Blakesburg 57-14. Against the Rockets, the Eagles rushed for 368 yards, led by Johnson Morgan’s 167 on just eight carries with four touchdowns. Cooper Spronk and Trey Steinkamp each had rushing scores. Brecken Ritzert was five of 14 throwing for 58 yards, two touchdowns and a pick. Spronk and Landon Fransman had the scoring grabs. Garrett Wielard had 10 tackles. On the year, the Eagles give up 38 points per night and score 17, averaging 227 yards per game, 148 on the ground. Individually, Ritzert is 22 of 63 passing for 222 yards, four touchdowns and four interceptions. His top target is Camden Parker with 11 catches 152 yards and a pair of touchdowns. On the ground, Spronk has 63 touches for 365 yards and two touchdowns. He leads the defense with 32 stops, three for loss. Parker has two interceptions on defense. Saturday, SK head coach Jared Jensen joined the KCII Radio Coaches Corner to talk about the matchup against PC.
Jensen said, “We know what Pella Christian is going to bring. We had a really though non-district schedule, their schedule strength is ranked No. 1. So you can throw records out the window. We know what’s at stake. We’re in the driver’s seat right now for the district championship and this is the next team in line that’s trying to knock us off. We know they are going to be well coached. I thought we came in with a great mindset (against Pleasantville). We’re a veteran enough group that they understand what’s at stake, and know what we need to do to get the job done!”
The Snakes have won three straight in the series including a 42-15 victory in Sigourney a year ago. Action starts Friday at 7p.m. at Pella Christian High School.
