It’s Week Seven of the high school football season, and the Washington Demons are looking to get another district victory in Week Seven as they travel to Davenport to face Assumption Catholic tonight in a game you can hear on KCII.

Washington has started 2-0 in Class 3A District 4 and is 5-1 overall, guaranteeing they will finish the season with a winning record after having a losing season in two of the last three years.

The Demons’ turnaround has been fueled by a defense that gives up only 17-and-a-half points and under 240 yards per game, sitting near the top of the district in takeaways, tackles for loss and sacks.

Senior Jude Carter has 52 total tackles to lead the team, while sophomore Brady Krantz and senior Keider Gomez-Valdez have combined for 18 tackles for loss and seven sacks as the starting defensive ends.

The offense got a huge game in last week’s 39-28 win over Mount Pleasant from quarterback Logan McDole, who threw for 313 yards and four touchdowns to raise his season totals to 670 yards and nine TDs while also completing over 70 percent of his pass attempts.

Fellow senior Mason Morgan was his top target with seven catches for 179 yards and is second in the district with 434 total receiving yards this season. Junior Kael Williams is also a playmaker for Washington with over 550 yards from scrimmage and eight scores.

The Demons are hoping to make some improvements, like doing better than allowing nearly 230 rushing yards to Mount Pleasant last week. Head coach Kelly Williams tells KCII Sports that his team can use that road test as another building block to this week’s trip to Davenport.

“It’ll be a good opportunity that we can learn from and fix some things, as players and as coaches,” Williams says. “Davenport Assumption [is going to] try to run it, so we’ll have to come up with a plan.”

Assumption beat Fort Madison two weeks ago for the first victory of the season before falling to state-ranked Mount Vernon. Senior Ben Yeggy has been a force running the ball for the Knights with over 480 yards on the ground for the best rushing offense in the district.

Despite just a 1-5 record so far this fall, Davenport Assumption has been a perennial playoff team in the past, only missing the postseason five times since 1989. Washington looks to move one step closer to securing their place in the Class 3A playoffs when the Demons take on the Knights in the Quad Cities.
