Washington County Extension and Outreach, in partnership with Volunteer Iowa, proudly announces the creation of the Youth Service Board. This initiative, led by Carys Miller, Brylee Gearhart, Jocci Carter, Oaklee Sobaski, and Jacob Flynn, aims to foster intergenerational connections and promote volunteerism among local youth. The board’s first project involved bringing students from Washington and Mid-Prairie High Schools to visit residents at the UP Home, Halcyon House, and Pleasantview Home. The goal was to engage youth with the aging population in Washington County, raising awareness about volunteer opportunities and highlighting the positive impact of such interactions. Approximately 113 students participated in this initiative, with 75% expressing a willingness to volunteer in a group again and 80% finding the experience highly rewarding. Building on this success, the Youth Service Board has launched a food drive, challenging the Mid-Prairie and Washington School Districts to see who can collect the most food by November 22nd. This effort aims to stock local food pantries in time for the holidays.
