The Washington Demons fell short Friday night on the football field, losing 34-6 at Davenport Assumption. Washington made an early mistake when quarterback Logan McDole threw his first interception of the season on the first drive of the game, and Assumption took advantage with a 36-yard rushing touchdown by Ben Yeggy on the very next play.

That early sequence set the tone of the night. The Demons would get within a point when McDole connected with fellow senior Conner Leyden for a 59-yard TD pass, but the Knights would build their lead with a pair of touchdown passes from senior Braylon Thomsen that made the score 21-6 going into halftime.

Assumption took the opening kickoff of the second half and marched down the field for another rushing score by Yeggy. The senior would get into the end zone one more time in the fourth quarter, while the Knights’ defense held Washington in check with two total takeaways and just under 210 yards allowed.

McDole completed seven out of 18 pass attempts for 138 yards and was intercepted twice. Meanwhile, the Demons struggled to slow down Assumption. Yeggy piled up 189 yards on 31 carries by himself, helping the Knights rush for over 280 yards in total.

After a second straight week allowing over 200 yards on the ground, Washington head coach Kelly Williams told KCII Sports after the game their first priority going forward is to figure out how to stop the run.

“[We] just really have to go back home and evaluate,” Williams said. “And that’s on me as a defensive coach. [We have] got to go back to the drawing board and figure it out.”

The loss drops the Demons to 2-1 in Class 3A District 4 and 5-2 overall. Washington will try to bounce back this coming Friday when they host Mount Vernon. You can catch Demon football on KCII Friday night starting at 7 on 106.1 FM.
