According to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources Fall Color Report, it’s a slow start to fall colors across Iowa. Some yellows and browns are starting to show across the forested landscape in southeast Iowa. Some maples in towns are starting to show a bit of various colors. Virginia creeper and poison ivy are red. Shagbark hickory is turning yellow and brown in south central Iowa. Sumacs and 5-leaf ivies are ruby-red. Swamp white oaks are starting to turn yellow. Green ashes are starting to show yellow. Prolonged drought stress is evident on many trees and shrubs. Dogwoods are showing purples. Many walnuts have dropped their leaves already. Hickories and maples are starting to change colors. Most oaks are still very green.
