On October 3rd, at approximately 3:06 pm the Columbus Junction Police Department attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a 2008 Nissan Maxima driven by 46-year-old Francisco Nunez of Muscatine. Nunez would stop, exit his vehicle then get back into the vehicle. Nunez then fled westbound from downtown Columbus Junction, nearly colliding with multiple vehicles at a high rate of speed. He continued on Hwy 92 where he crashed at a road construction barrier near X17, then rolled the vehicle several times. The driver ran from the crash into timber to the south. A perimeter was set up with Columbus Junction Police Department Officers and Louisa County Sheriff’s Deputies, later locating the subject with K9 Officer Drake and utilizing a drone. A Deputy Sheriff sustained minor injuries in the attempt to capture the subject in the timber s. Nunez complained of injuries, but was cleared later at a local hospital. Nunez remains at the Louisa County Jail on a $7,500.00 cash only bond.  As a result of this incident, Nunez has been charged with: Felony Eluding a class C Felony, Driving while revoked-OWI-related a Serious Misdemeanor, Interference with official acts a Simple Misdemeanor,  Driving while suspended a Simple Misdemeanor, Reckless Driving a Simple Misdemeanor, and multiple traffic citations. The Columbus Junction Police Department was assisted by the Louisa County Ambulance, Mincer’s Towing, Iowa State Patrol, Iowa DOT and the Louisa County Sheriff’s Office.
