The Class 1A District 6 champion Sigourney-Keota Cobra football team will look to end their regular season unbeaten in district play tonight on the KCII3 Stream, as they welcome the Rockets of Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont to the Snake Pit.

It’s been another stellar season for the #8 in Class 1A Sigourney-Keota Cobras, as they wrapped up a district championship last week with a road victory at Colfax-Mingo by a final of 62-26 to move themselves to 6-1 overall and an unbeaten 4-0 in Class 1A District 6. Brayden Wood finished as the leading passer, completing four of five throws for 94 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for 54 yards and another score. Senior tailback Isaac Bruns continued a monster season on the ground, tallying 164 yards on just six carries and found the end zone four times. Bruns also caught two passes for 28 yards and had another score. Aidan Greiner led the defense with five tackles, and assisted on a TFL. Chase Haifley and John Berg combined for two picks, while Landon Conrad scooped up a blocked Tigerhawk field goal attempt and ran it back 94 yards for a special teams score. This season, the Snakes put up 36.4 points-per-game and give up 18.4. S/K has completed 16 of their 29 pass attempts for 317 yards with five touchdowns and four interceptions. The Cobras have romped on the ground, racking up over 2,000 yards on 300 carries and have hit pay dirt 29 times. The S/K defense has been solid through seven games too, recording 269 stops, 37 for a loss, four sacks, five fumble recoveries, seven interceptions, a safety, two scoop-and-scores, and a pick-6. Sigourney-Keota has missed their lone field goal attempt this season, but has made 23 of their 29 PAT’s.

The Rockets from Eddyville take flight bound for Sigourney tonight with hopes of improving their district standing. They currently sit at 2-5 overall and 2-2 in district play after a loss at home to Pleasantville last week 48-22. Dalton Brinegar completed 6 of his 11 passes for 76 yards and a 24-yard touchdown toss to Emmett Holohan, which was his only reception. Brinegar also ran for 62 yards and a score on seven carries. Cayel Riley led the defense with nine tackles. Brinegar had seven tackles and a pick. This season, EBF puts up 18.6 points-per-game and gives up 39.4. The Rockets are 41/126 through the air for 507 yards with five touchdowns and 12 interceptions. On the ground, EBF has rushed for 1,106 yards on 287 carries with 13 touchdowns. Their defense has 281 tackles, 25 for loss, three sacks, six fumble recoveries, and four picks.

Cobra head man Jared Jensen joined us on the latest edition of the KCII Radio Coaches Corner to talk about improvements his team needs to make before tonight’s regular season finale with the Rockets and the pending playoffs. “Didn’t feel great about our pass coverage versus Colfax [Mingo]. Had a few breakdowns which led to long touchdowns. We’ve got to make sure we get that stuff cleaned up because come playoffs, most teams aren’t going to just run the ball. They’re going to try to throw the ball on you. We’ve just got to clean some things up there. I think that will help keep us engaged this last week leading into the playoffs, hopefully playing at an all-time high,” Jensen said.

In the Varsity Bound era, S/K leads the all-time series with the Rockets 7-3 dating back to 2011, and have taken the last three matchups. Their most recent contest came on October 13th of last season when the Cobras emerged victorious by a final of 62-12.
