The Washington Demons begin their volleyball playoff journey tonight by hosting Mediapolis in the Class 3A Region 5 quarterfinals, and you can hear all the action on KCII.

Washington heads into the postseason with a record of 17-15, guaranteeing that they’ll finish with their first winning season since 2007, and are riding high off of claiming their first Southeast Conference championship of the 21st century last week.

Leading the charge has been junior outside hitter Leighton Messinger. The reigning Southeast Conference Player of the Year has team highs of 268 kills and 226 digs, as well as 32 serving aces.

Sophomore middle blocker Layla Green has been a welcome addition for the Demons, putting up 166 kills and a team-best 42 blocked shots. Junior Taylor Miksch has also been a force at the net with 126 kills and 20 blocks.

The senior class has made a big impact for Washington as well. Outside hitter Ella Greiner has 147 kills, 221 digs and 40 aces, while setter Lauren Hinrichsen has posted 20 aces and 177 digs to go with the over 600 assists she’s handed out. But Demon head coach Aaron Six tells KCII Sports that his team’s secret ingredient is great chemistry.

“I think it’s just a matter of us playing together as a team,” Six says, “and really believing in one another and lifting each other up when we have some mistakes. I think those are the things that we can do to continue with the success we had [in the regular season].”

Washington will be facing a Mediapolis team that is 16-18. The Demons defeated the Bulldogs in straight sets back on September 5th. You can hear Washington Demon playoff volleyball this evening on 106.1 FM and streaming on KCIIradio.com and the KCII1 app, starting with pregame coverage at 6:30.
