Three local teams are looking to survive and advance in the volleyball playoffs as they compete in regional quarterfinals tonight. The Sigourney Savages are hoping for a second straight season with a trip to the regional semifinals as they host Montezuma this evening in Class 1A Region 1.

Sigourney’s straight-sets victory over Martensdale-St Marys on Monday has raised their record to 16-5 and was their fifth win in the last six matches. The Savages have gotten a big year from outside hitter Josephine Moore, who has team highs of 178 kills, 252 digs and 28 serving aces.

Fellow senior Reagan Clarahan has been a force in the middle with 141 kills and 44 blocked shots, while sophomore Bailey Gretter does a little bit of everything with 82 kills, 163 assists, 19 aces, 193 digs and 10 blocks.

Winfield-Mount Union will try to reach the Class 1A Region 2 semis but will have to go through top seed and third-ranked Holy Trinity Catholic. The Wolves have gone 13-10 and have won three straight, including a four-set victory over Lone Tree in the first round.

Junior Kellee Milks leads WMU with 185 kills and also has 26 aces and 270 digs. Freshman Kynlee Buffington is carving out space at middle hitter with 147 kills and a team-high 45 blocks, while junior Quin Smith is a force both at and away from the net with 84 kills, 30 aces and 35 blocks.

Columbus will also try to topple a state-ranked squad when they visit number-14 West Burlington in Class 2A Region 3. The Wildcats’ win over Danville on Monday has them at 11-16.

Jessica Del Rio leads the team with 134 kills and has also racked up 30 aces, while fellow junior Kennedy Woepking has 110 kills, 21 aces and 243 digs. Senior Aracely Garza has also been a crucial piece for the ‘Cats with 89 kills, 38 aces and 218 digs. All regional quarterfinal matches begin this evening at 7.
