The high school football playoffs begin tonight for the Winfield-Mount Union Wolves as they travel to Montezuma for eight-player first-round action.
WMU is coming in off back-to-back wins to finish the regular season, sitting at 5-3 and looking to avenge a 55-14 loss they suffered to Montezuma earlier this season where a number of starters were missing due to injury.
Among those not playing on September 20th was starting quarterback Jake Edwards, who has passed for 1,336 yards and 17 touchdowns while also rushing for 10 scores.
Fellow senior Lane Genkinger has been a force for Winfield-Mount Union however he touches the ball, leading the team in both rushing and receiving and piling up over 1,400 yards from scrimmage and 22 total TDs.
Junior Max Edwards has also been a big-play threat at receiver with 26 catches for 460 yards and six touchdowns, while senior Cooper Buffington leads the defense with 47 total tackles and has combined with Genkinger and Max Edwards for 27 tackles for loss.
The Wolves will be trying to slow down a high-scoring Montezuma team that has ridden scoring nearly 59 points per game to an 8-1 record and seven straight wins. Junior QB Brady Boulton’s over 900 yards and 14 TDs on the ground leads a fierce rushing attack that generates over 270 yards per game.
WMU beat the Braves last season 70-20, their only win in the series since 2008. This time around it’s for a spot in the second round of the state postseason. Winfield-Mount Union kicks things off at Montezuma this evening at 7.
