Both the Winfield-Mount Union Wolves and Columbus Wildcats had their volleyball seasons come to a close with playoff losses Wednesday night.
Winfield-Mount Union fell in the Class 1A Region 2 quarterfinals at Holy Trinity Catholic. The Wolves dropped the first set 25-13 to the number-three ranked team in the state and could not ever catch, losing the next two frames 25-10 and 25-9.
Freshman Kynlee Buffington had six kills and one blocked shot to lead WMU, while junior Kellee Milks added three kills and nine digs. Senior libero Pacey Schlee made eight digs on defense, while junior setter Madisen Kellogg handed out 14 assists to go with two kills and two serving aces.
The season ends for Winfield-Mount Union with a record of 13-11. The Wolves will now say farewell to a pair of seniors in Schlee and Josie Nelson.
Columbus also lost in straight sets Wednesday at West Burlington, losing the first frame 25-9 in the Class 2A Region 3 quarterfinals before dropping the final two sets as well, 25-4 and 25-14. Five kills from Jessica Del Rio paced the Wildcat attack, while fellow junior Kennedy Woepking had three kills and 10 digs.
Senior Aracely Garza was one dig shy of an identical line, the lone senior that Columbus will lose to graduation after this year. Junior Daniela Diaz came up with a kill, six digs and a block to go with the 10 assists she distributed as the Wildcats wrap up the season with an 11-17 record.
