The Washington Demons finished off their football season Friday with a 41-21 win at Fort Madison. Washington made a statement right from the start, marching the ball 75 yards in 15 plays and six-and-a-half minutes on the game’s opening drive and scoring on a 30-yard touchdown pass from Logan McDole to fellow senior Jayfred Espinosa.
Fort Madison would tie the game at 7 after they intercepted a McDole pass and returned it for a TD, but the Demons would have an answer after their defense forced a turnover on downs, as McDole found junior running back Kael Williams on the run for a 48-yard catch and run to the end zone.
Washington would get on the board again with less than a minute left in the second quarter after McDole threw a 24-yard scoring pass to senior Mason Morgan, building a 21-7 lead going into halftime.
The Demons would keep things rolling in the second half, as seniors Jude Carter and Summit Keith each scored two-yard rushing touchdowns to stretch the lead to 34-7 going into the final period.
McDole’s fourth TD pass of the night would finish off the scoring, as he found senior Oliver Hobscheidt from 21 yards out on the first play of the fourth quarter. The defense surrendered a pair of late scores to Fort Madison, but Washington still surrendered less than 220 yards to the Bloodhounds.
In addition to completing seven out of 11 pass attempts for 140 yards and four scores, McDole led the Demon rushing attack with 22 carries for 175 yards.
Williams added 65 yards on 15 attempts as Washington piled up 293 yards on the ground. After three straight losses to Fort Madison coming in, head coach Kelly Williams told KCII Sports that the Demons came up big on the road.
“I challenged them all week,” Williams said. “We’ve struggled getting off the bus [at Fort Madison]. It’s just a testament to all their hard work. They came out and played hard. The opening drive of the second half, when we ran the ball consistently, that’s a testament to the offensive line. Just a heck of a job.”
After just two wins last year, Washington finishes this season with a record of 6-3, going undefeated against Southeast Conference competition and coming just three spots shy of a bid into the Class 3A playoffs.
The Demons will be losing 12 seniors after this year, including McDole, Espinosa, Morgan, Carter, Keith, Hobscheidt, Keider Gomez Valdez, Conner Leyden, Cyaden Schenkel, Braylon Hamilton, Layne Moore and Lucas Zahs.
