Football season wrapped up for the Columbus Wildcats with a 61-13 loss at Maquoketa Valley this past Friday night in the first round of the Class A playoffs. Columbus fell behind 27-0 by the end of the first quarter and would be down by more than 40 by halftime.
The Wildcats would get a touchdown run from senior Riley Kaalberg in the fourth quarter, and sophomore Lamar Ceant would also return a kickoff for a TD in the final period. Kaalberg led the Columbus offense with 100 yards rushing on 11 carries, while junior Tyson Kaalberg had a big night for the Wildcat defense with 11 tackles.
The season ends for Columbus with a 4-5 record. The ‘Cats will now bid farewell to eight seniors, including Kaalberg, Keaton Clark, Bryce Grimm, Brian Portillo, Payton White, Juan Chairez, Jorge Lara and Markell and Itai Zapiensz.
