Sigourney-Keota wrestling is ready to get a new season rolling, with some of the top grapplers in the area suiting up for them once again.
That includes senior Reanah Utterback, the reigning girls’ state champion at 115 pounds who was a perfect 40-0 last season. But SK girls’ wrestling head coach Trevor Weeks tells KCII Sports that Utterback is never satisfied and is still working to perfect a craft she loves.
“It’s just her passion,” Weeks says. “She wakes up, she eats, she sleeps, she goes to school [and] she does wrestling. It’s just something that’s sparked interest in her entire life. She has pretty lofty goals [and] we haven’t reached them yet.”
The Sigourney-Keota boys are looking to rebound after failing to have at least one state qualifier for the first time in six years. Senior Brady Clark came close to a trip to Des Moines by finishing third in his district at 138 lbs and posting a record of 31-12 last season.
Juniors Jacob Libe and Owen Menke return and showed plenty of potential by combining for 43 victories last winter. SK head coach Cory VanDenHuevel tells KCII Sports all his team needs now is some motivation, and missing out on a trip to state is providing just that.
“It gets under a lot of people’s skin, mine included,” VanDenHeuvel says. “Hopefully the kids are fired up for a little bit of redemption. If you do what’s best for you as an individual, most of the time it works out to be best for the team.”
Sigourney-Keota will have its first meet of the boys’ wrestling season December 5th when they host Montezuma, while the SK girls are welcoming local teams to town Tuesday to open up their campaign.
