It’s the first doubleheader of the season for Washington Demon basketball as both teams travel to Albia tonight, and you can hear all the action on KCII.
The Washington girls will get the evening started looking for a 2-0 start to the season. The Demons downed Muscatine 55-52 in overtime last week in the season opener, led by senior Kendall Hinrichsen and junior Addison Miller scoring 16 points each.
Washington will also look to junior point guard Adalyn Long for a big game after she averaged nearly 12 points, two-and-a-half assists and 2.5 steals per game last season.
Demons head coach Shannon Rugg tells KCII Sports that he has an experienced and promising squad that is at its best when they can create havoc with their defense.
“We’re trying to do some different things on the defensive end to try and create some more turnovers this year,” Rugg says. “It’s the most talented team that I’ve had since I’ve been here. They’re long and athletic, and the confidence is starting to come.”
The Washington boys make their season debut this evening and are looking for a major turnaround from going 6-15 last winter, their first losing season in five years.
Logan McDole will be one of the leaders of an experienced squad that loses only one graduate, as the now-senior put up team highs of almost 12.5 points, four rebounds and three assists per contest.
Junior guard Drew Conrad is also back after scoring nearly 12 points a game, as is sharp-shooting sophomore Nic Stone, who was near the top of the Southeast Conference in made three-pointers in his debut season.
Demons head coach Collin Stark tells KCII Sports that long-range shooting will again be a big key to his team’s success, but they could be even better at knocking down shots.
“I think our shooting percentage will improve by sometimes even just taking better shots [and] not forcing certain things,” Stark says, “and that’s just from one extra year of playing varsity basketball, where things hopefully are slowing down a little bit.”
Washington won both the girls’ and boys’ games against Albia last season. You can catch both battles as Demon basketball comes your way on KCII tonight starting with the Countdown to Tip-Off at 5:30 on 106.1 FM and streaming on KCIIradio.com and the KCII1 app.
