The Washington Demons suffered a pair of losses on the basketball court last night at Albia. The Washington girls started strong, taking a 12-9 lead at the end of the first quarter, but failing to make a basket from the field in the second period put them on the wrong end of a 21-3 run that put Albia up double digits at halftime.
From there, the Demons would only get the margin as close as 10 points in the second half on their way to a 48-33 defeat. Adalyn Long led the team by scoring 13 points, while fellow junior Oaklee Sobaski added eight as Washington drops to 1-1.
The Demon boys also jumped out to the initial lead at Albia, going up 16-11 after a quarter of play. But the home team dominated the rest of the night. A 24-8 run to close out the first half put the Blue Demons up by 11 at the break, and they would keep building the lead on their way to a resounding 82-49 victory.
Sophomore Nic Stone paced Washington with 12 points and senior Logan McDole added 11 as the Demons drop their season opener. Both Washington teams are next in action tomorrow against Grinnell.
