The Winfield-Mount Union Wolves had to gut out a fourth-quarter comeback to win their boys’ basketball season opener Tuesday night, rallying on the road to take down Louisa-Muscatine 40-38.
WMU got off to a slow start and fell behind 14-2 by the end of the first quarter. But the Wolves sliced the deficit down to nine points by halftime and were within six going into the final period, where they would complete the comeback with an 18-10 run.
Senior Jake Edwards had a big night to bring home a victory for Winfield-Mount Union, scoring a game-high 22 points and collecting 10 rebounds and five steals for a double-double.
Edwards also knocked down three three-point shots, while junior Nic Sparrow also hit a triple and finished the night with five points, three assists and three steals to help the Wolves begin the season with a conference victory.
WMU would take a loss in the girls’ game. After trailing 10-8 a quarter in, Winfield-Mount Union finished the first half on a 12-3 run to take a 20-13 lead into the half. Unfortunately, Louisa-Muscatine countered with a 17-4 run to start the third quarter, and the Falcons would hang on to win 43-36.
Junior Madison Kellogg paced the Wolves by scoring 16 points and hitting four treys. Freshman Kynlee Buffington added a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds, but it was not quite enough to extend WMU’s 2-0 start.
After suffering their first loss in the North division of the Southeast Iowa Super Conference, Winfield-Mount Union will try to bounce back on the road when they next play Friday at Lone Tree.
