It’s a pair of all-KCII area contests Tuesday when Winfield-Mt. Union hosts Hillcrest Academy for a boys and girls Southeast Iowa Superconference doubleheader. The Lady Wolves are 2-3 overall this season and 1-1 in the Superconference. They were beaten by Mendon, Illinois Saturday 52-21 at Central Lee, despite 15 points from Kynlee Buffington. This year WMU scores 36 points per game and gives up 44, shooting 27% from the field, 21% from three and 45% at the line with 34 rebounds, nine steals, eight assists and 27 turnovers per game. Individually, Buffington leads at 15 points and 12 boards per night with Josie Nelson going for three steals and three assists per game.
Hillcrest Academy is 2-2 overall this year and still in search of their first conference win after a 55-35 loss last time out to Columbus where Malia Yoder led with a dozen points. The Ravens score 51 per night and give up 47, shooting 32% from the floor, 28% from three and 46% at the line with 36 rebounds, 19 steals, 13 assists and 26 turnovers per night. Individually, Claire Withrow puts up 19 points per game, Delaney Shaw averages 10 rebounds and Malia Yoder has six steals and five assists per night. The Wolves have won 23 of the last 28 in the series and eight of nine, but the two teams split a season ago, each winning on their own home floor.
The Winfield-Mt. Union boys are 2-1 this year, 2-0 in the Superconference. They were beaten 58-42 by Centerville Saturday at Central Lee with Jake Edwards putting up 24 points. This season, the Wolves go for 44 points per game and give up 46, shooting 32% from the field, 30% from deep and 51% at the line, with 30 rebounds, 11 assists, seven steals and 12 turnovers per game. Individually, Edwards leads with 19 points, three steals and three assists per night. Cooper Buffington averages six boards per game.
Hillcrest Academy is 3-0, 2-0 in league play, after a 59-41 win at West Liberty Saturday where Seth Ours scored 26. On the season, the Ravens average 72 points per game and give up 36, shooting 53% from the field, 30% from three and 65% at the line with 32 rebounds, 15 assists, 12 steals and 11 turnovers per night. Individually, Ours has 19 points per contest, Mason Bender eight boards and Rowan Miller five steals and three assists to lead. Overall, Hillcrest has won 25 of the last 35 meetings between these schools, but the Wolves are on a seven game streak against the Ravens including sweeping both meetings last year.
