The Columbus Wildcats and Winfield-Mount Union Wolves split their Southeast Iowa Super Conference doubleheader on the basketball court last night. The Columbus girls won 54-33, starting the game on a 16-2 run and building their lead over Winfield-Mount Union to 24 points by halftime.

Ariana Vergara led Columbus in scoring with 16 points, while fellow senior Lily Coil had 10 points and junior Isabel Rendon scored nine as the Wildcats remain undefeated in the North division of the Southeast Iowa Super Conference and improve to 6-1 overall. Meanwhile, WMU falls to 2-6, including a 1-4 record in conference play.

Columbus took the initial lead in the boys’ game as well, but a 21-10 run to close the first half put the Wolves up 32-25 at the break. Winfield-Mount Union pushed their advantage to as large as 15 points going into the fourth quarter and would hold on to defeat the Wildcats 63-52.

The victory raises WMU’s record to 4-1 in the Super Conference North and 4-2 overall, while Columbus drops to 1-3 in league play and 2-4 in total. Both packs of Wolves will next play Thursday against Mediapolis, while both Wildcat squads play that same night against New London.
