Both teams picked up wins on the basketball court Tuesday night when the Highland Huskies visited Wapello. The Highland girls grabbed a 13-5 lead in the first quarter and used a big offensive second period to push their advantage to 35-23 at halftime, going on to win 67-48.

Sophomore Hailey Brun went 10-of-20 shooting the basketball to lead the Huskies with 22 points scored and added five steals and four assists. Freshman Kamryn Fink had a double-double with 16 points and 15 rebounds while also coming up with four steals and two blocked shots.

Three made three-point shots and 11 points total from junior Emersyn Schultz added to a win that raises Highland’s record to 4-1 in the North division of the Southeast Iowa Super Conference and 6-1 overall.

The Husky boys also won 67-48, jumping out to an 18-7 lead before scoring 20 points each in the second and third quarters to go up by as much as 25.

Junior Bryce Hazelett had a huge night on offense, going 12-of-22 from the field and pouring in a game-high 30 points while also collecting seven steals on defense. Senior Logan McFarland added 14 points, eight rebounds and three assists as Highland gets its first victory of the season.

The Lone Tree Lions were also victorious in girls’ basketball Tuesday, rolling past Pekin 64-52. Lone Tree doubled a 15-12 lead after a quarter of play, but it was their 21-11 run to start the second half where they seized control, grabbing a fourth straight win to improve to 4-2 in the Super Conference North and 6-2 overall.

The Lone Tree boys would not have the same good luck, falling at Pekin 63-46. A tie game after one quarter would become a four-point Pekin lead at the half, and after the Panthers doubled their advantage going into the final frame, they finished the game on a 15-6 run.

The loss drops the Lions to 2-4, including a 2-3 record in conference play. While both Lone Tree teams travel to Louisa-Musactine tomorrow evening, both Highland teams are back in action tonight against WACO.
