One of the great rivalries in southeast Iowa high school basketball is renewed tonight when the Washignton Demons visit Mount Pleasant for a doubleheader that you can catch on KCII.

Washington won both meetings with Mount Pleasant in girls’ hoops last season, and the Demons will be looking for another victory as they come in with a 2-5 record so far this winter.

Guard Adalyn Long has given the offense consistent scoring by putting up over 10 points per game, and fellow junior Oaklee Sobaski has picked up her scoring and shooting pace with 43 points and nine made three-pointers over the last four games combined.

Still, Washington is looking to avoid back-to-back losses after falling their last time out at West Liberty. Head coach Shannon Rugg tells KCII Sports getting a win in this rivalry game would help build momentum into the winter holiday break.

“I like where we’re at [if] we can make a little bit of a run here right before Christmas,” Rugg says. “We’ve got a tough schedule coming up, but they’re games we can win, and as long as we keep getting better and do things right, we’re going to be okay.”

While the girls take on a Mount Pleasant team that is 1-6, the Demon boys are looking to earn some redemption against the Panthers, having dropped four straight to the back-to-back Southeast Conference champions.

Washington has consecutive wins to come in with a 3-3 record and is off to a 2-0 start to conference play. Senior Logan McDole, junior Drew Conrad and sophomore Nic Stone have done the heavy lifting for the offense, each averaging double-figure scoring and combining to pour in over 34 points per contest.

But head coach Collin Stark tells KCII Sports they’ll need a full team effort to stay undefeated in league action and finally get one against their long-time rivals.

“Every single game in this conference has been close,” Stark says, “and I don’t expect anything different. Our guys will be ready to change that side of it.”

Mount Pleasant is winless so far this season in boys’ basketball. You can catch both games this evening as the Demons duel with the Panthers on 106.1 FM KCII and streaming on KCIIradio.com and the KCII1 app, starting with the Countdown to Tip-Off at 5:30.
