Both Sigourney Savage basketball teams suffered home losses to solid teams from Montezuma just before the winter holiday break. The Sigourney boys responded to a nine-point deficit at the end of the first quarter December 20th by rallying to take a 37-32 lead into halftime.
Montezuma had an answer in the third period and went in front 59-53, and while the Savages hung tough, they could never fully catch the 6-1 Braves and lost a 71-68 thriller. The loss drops Sigourney to 3-2 in the South Iowa Cedar League and 4-2 overall.
The Savage girls fell to seventh-ranked Montezuma 64-46, but they were in the game most of the night, only trailing by single digits after each of the first three quarters. Unfortunately, the Braves summoned a 19-5 run to close the game out.
In addition to a first conference defeat, Sigourney’s overall record falls to 5-2. Both Savage squads next play this coming Friday at Lynnville-Sully.
