Gardening can be a fun thing to do as many people enjoy it as a profession or hobby. Cassie Wilkerson, a resident of Kalona, has been gardening for decades and enjoys every second of it. Wilkerson enjoys it so much that she will be hosting a class for it at the Kalona Library this Saturday, January 11th at 10 a.m.
Wilkerson started gardening professionally back in the 80`s and then worked at Menards in the landscape center. Cassie Wilkerson encourages everyone tod grow something no matter how big or small it is, “I am just a big proponent of everyone growing something, even if you live in an apartment you can put earth in a window seal. If you have a window, you can grow basil or you can grow chi, just something small even if you don’t have a yard. I know people that grow tomatoes in pots, that to me is awesome. I am one of those people that think you should get your hands in the dirt a little bit, I play in the dirt.”
Wilkerson hopes to teach this class yearly and can’t wait to get started. When asked if she had taught a class like this before and she responded, “ We have had a class like this, but it was more for children and it wasn’t quite like this. It was more of them getting used to planting seeds and we had them plant flowers, water them in, and take them home and all that. But that got me the idea for the adult class because a lot of the parents asked why you don’t have class for us, so I talked some more about it and we decided to go for it”.
The class is available for all adults, regardless of gardening experience. Wilkerson will focus on seed starting. No registration is needed.
