The Keota Eagles cruised to another boys’ basketball win Tuesday night by defeating HLV 74-45. Already having jumped out to a 27-15 lead in the first quarter, Keota finished the first half on a 12-6 run and never looked back.
Billie Kindred had a huge night for the Eagles, scoring a career-high 41 points and hitting eight three-point baskets. The senior also pulled down 14 rebounds and had four steals on defense.
Junior Chase Haifley added a double-double of 17 points and 10 assists as Keota improves to 6-1 in the South Iowa Cedar League and 8-1 overall.
The Eagle girls would not get the same favorable result, falling to HLV 46-31. Only down by two points at halftime, Keota saw the Warriors start the third period on a 12-3 run to seize control. Sophomore Emily Conger had 13 points, six rebounds and two steals as the Eagles drop to 1-6 in conference play and 2-8 in total.
The Sigourney Savages were hoping to earn some big conference wins on the road Tuesday night, but both teams came up just short at North Mahaska. Despite allowing a 20-7 run to start the game, the Sigourney boys nearly cut their deficit in half at the half.
But North Mashaska stayed in front the whole way and earned a 67-60 victory. Senior Isaac Bruns had a team-high 24 points, while junior Solon Yates finished with 15 points and seven rebounds as the Savages fall to 4-4, including a 3-4 record in the South Iowa Cedar League.
The Sigourney girls would lose 59-44 to North Mahaska, but the Savages had the lead after one quarter against the second-ranked team in Class 2A and were only down three entering the final period. Unfortunately, that’s where the Warhawks summoned a 19-7 run to close out the game.
Freshman Brynn Clarahan scored a game-high 21 points to lead Sigourney and picked up six steals on defense, while senior Josephine Moore added 14 points, 11 rebounds and three steals. The loss drops the Savages to 5-4, including a 4-3 record in conference play.
While both Sigourney teams next play tomorrow at home against BGM, both Keota squads hit the the road tomorrow evening to face Colfax-Mingo.
