washingtondemons-2

The Washington Demons will try to finish off the week with some road basketball victories when they travel to meet conference rival Burlington for a doubleheader you can hear tonight on KCII.

The Washington girls come in at 3-8, including a 2-2 record in the Southeast Conference. The Demons are playing elite defense, surrendering only 40-and-a-half points per game, but their offense has scored only slightly more, resulting in three straight losses and four total defeats by single-digit margins this season.

There is offensive talent, like guard Adalyn Long, who leads the team by scoring nearly 10 points per contest, and fellow junior Oaklee Sobaski, who averages 10 points a game scored in conference play. Head coach Shannon Rugg tells KCII Sports they just need their shooting and scoring to catch up to their ability to get stops.

“Defensively, we’re going to give ourselves a chance to win basketball games,” Rugg says. “Now we just concern [ourselves] with the offensive side of it.”

As the girls confront a Burlington team that is 6-4 and tied for second place in the Southeast by winning three of their first four in conference action, the Washington boys will be looking to end a skid of their own. Back-to-back losses to begin January have dropped the Demons to 5-5 and tied them for first place in the league with Fort Madison.

Logan McDole has been steady at point guard with team highs of 12 points and three assists per game, and fellow senior Seth Shepherd has made a splash by scoring 23 points over the last two games, his first contests of the season. Head coach Collin Stark says Shepherd shows the potential depth of his squad.

“We’ve got guys that can come in and give us some good quality minutes,” Stark says, “so now it’s just [a matter of] earning those minutes. Seth did a good job of showing that he deserves the minutes he was getting, and maybe some more.”

Washington will be facing a Burlington team that is 2-7, but both wins came inside league play. You can catch both games between the Demons and the Grayhounds this evening on 106.1 FM KCII and streaming on KCIIradio.com and the KCII1 app, starting with the Countdown to Tip-Off at 5:30.
