The Washington Demons fell in both conference basketball clashes at Burlington Friday night. The Washington girls only trailed 14-12 at the end of the first quarter, but just one made field goal over the next two periods meant they entered the fourth quarter down 20, and despite a late push, they would suffer a 49-36 loss.
Junior Adalyn Long scored 15 of her 17 points in the second half to lead the Demons, who fall to 2-3 in the Southeast Conference and 3-9 overall.
The Washington boys were only down five at halftime, but Burlington opened the second half on a 22-11 run to lead 49-33. The Demons nearly pulled off a wild fourth-quarter rally with a 21-8 run of their own and had a trip to tie the game with less than 30 seconds left, but a turnover led to a bucket that sealed a 59-54 win for Burlington.
Junior Drew Conrad paced Washington by scoring 13 points, while senior Seth Shepherd had 12 and sophomore Nic Stone finished with 11. A third straight loss drops the Demons to 3-2 in conference play and 5-6 in total.
