This week, Mid-Prairie boys head coach Daren Lambert talked with KCII about the keys against Regina.
Lambert said, “I’m proud of the way the guys responded (after the loss at Alburnett) and set the tone for the week. This is a big week and we want to go 3-0 this week, but you can’t go 3-0 if you don’t start 1-0. So the focus was win at Williamsburg. It’s always fun to come here and win and to do in a fashion where we felt like we dominated a lot of the aspects of the game is a great start to the week. Guys are happy that we’re winning but it’s almost like they are already thinking about the big one on Tuesday against Regina and they know the job isn’t finished yet this week.”
Mid-Prairie has won six of the last eight, with the two teams splitting last year’s season series.
The Golden Hawk girls are 8-2 this year after a 64-49 loss at Williamsburg on Monday. On the season, the Hawks score 64 points per night and give up 43, shooting 39% from the field, 28% from three and 69% at the line with 40 rebounds, 19 steals, 17 assists and 19 turnovers per game. Individually, Callie Huber’s 13 points and 10 boards lead the way, Katelyn Harland has four assists and Jeorgia Evans four steals.
Iowa City Regina is 10-1 this season, 5-0 in the River Valley after a 67-21 win a week ago against West Liberty. The Regals are ranked No. 3 in the latest Class 2A poll from the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. They score 72 per night and give up 39, shooting 49% from the floor, 37% from three and 63% from the line with 29 rebounds, 18 assists and steals and 10 turnovers per game. Individually, Morgan Miller leads with 24 points and five steals per game. Addie McLaughlin has six steals and Caitlin Martin five rebounds per night. Golden Hawk head girls coach Danny Hershberger spoke with KCII Monday about the keys against the Regals.
Hershberger said, “The biggest thing for us is to continue to have the energy and effort that we played with at Williamsburg. Our toughness in that game was the best it’s been all year. We have to be that consistent every single time out. If we’re able to do those things and take care of what we can take care of, our shooting is going to come around. We proved at Williamsburg that we can play with a top ten team on the road. We just have to take care of a few little things and we’re right there.”
Regina has won 11 straight in the series with the Hawks last victory coming in 2018.
