Two KCII-area schools got together Tuesday night in Columbus Junction for a Southeast Iowa Superconference basketball doubleheader when the Hillcrest Academy Ravens met the Columbus Wildcats. The home team took the girls game 46-33. Columbus doubled up the Ravens 10-5 after one, Hillcrest won the second period to hang in at 20-16 at half. The Wildcats methodically pulled away after the break outscoring the Ravens 26-17 for the win. Columbus pulled in 29 rebounds and had 21 steals. Lily Coil led the Wildcat attack with 23 points, Isabel Rendon had 11. Naveiah Garza finished with nine rebounds and Ariana Vergara four assists as the Wildcats stay on top of the Superconference at 10-1 and 12-2 overall. Hillcrest falls to 5-8 overall, 3-7 in the league.
The Raven boys ran away with a 70-33 win in the night cap. They were dominant from the opening tip with 23-5 first period run and a 21-10 second quarter sprint to lead 44-15 at half. Another 18-2 push in the third put the game out of reach. Hillcrest’s night was highlighted by a special moment for senior Seth Ours, who with a layup in the first quarter, became the ninth Raven to reach 1,000 career points in school history. He finished with 14 on the night. Ryan Coil led the ‘Cats with 11 points. Hillcrest is in the top spot in the conference at 9-1, 12-1 overall, as Columbus falls to 5-8 on the year, 3-7 in league play.
