Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union won both their boys’ wrestling team duals at WACO last night, knocking off the hosting Warriors 59-17 after defeating New London 48-35. Junior Kason Dopler led the way for the Wildcats by winning twice at 175 pounds, once by fall and another by a 9-1 major decision.
Columbus/WMU also got victories by technical knockout from freshman Dante Orozco at 132 lbs and junior Bowen Thomson at 144, while senior Riley Kaalberg needed overtime to win by sudden victory at 165.
The Wildcats got wins by pin from sophomore Justin Knipfer at 113; senior Jacob Nelson at 126; junior Alex Venzor at 150; senior Markel Zapiensz at 215; junior Trevor Phillips at 190; and senior Itai Zapiensz at 285.
While they lost to Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union, WACO would defeat New London 48-34. Senior Louden Huisenga led the team by winning twice at 190 lbs and remaining undefeated this season. The Warriors also got pins to win from freshman Ian Maize at 106, senior Gage Samo at 120 and junior Harley Larrimore at 175.
As part of the girls’ bouts in Wayland, Rylee Rice won twice by pin at 110 lbs for WACO, while fellow senior Elyssa Graber got a victory by fall at 105 for the Warriors, as did sophomore Deedra Graber at 115 and senior Cayten Coakley at 120.
Freshman Aubrey Valencia was a winner twice by pin at 115 for Columbus/WMU, while senior Maritza Tovar picked up a victory by TKO at 100 lbs. The Wildcats also got pins to win from freshmen Jalynn Phillips at 110 and Kalley Deese at 125.
