The Highland Huskies and Winfield-Mount Union Wolves split their basketball doubleheader Tuesday in Riverside. Winfield-Mount Union jumped out to a 12-6 lead in the girls’ game and was still up 27-20 at halftime, but a 13-4 run in the third quarter turned things around for Highland, who held on to win a 44-42 thriller.
Freshman Kamryn Fink led the Huskies with 11 points and had 12 rebounds, four steals and two blocked shots. Teammate Mackenzie Davis came close to a double-double as well with nine points and 13 rebounds, while fellow junior Emersyn Schultz also scored nine points.
Sophomore Katelyn Thomann added eight points, eight boards, five assists and seven steals as Highland improves to 7-5 in the North division of the Southeast Iowa Super Conference and 11-5 overall. Meanwhile, Winfield-Mount Union falls to 2-15, including a 1-11 conference record.
The WMU boys turned a one-point lead after one quarter into a 22-14 halftime advantage, but it was the 23-2 run to start the second half that put the Wolves in total control on their way to a 62-24 victory over the Huskies.
Jake Edwards paced Winfield-Mount Union with 20 points, eight assists and five steals, while fellow senior Cooper Buffington had 14 points and six rebounds. Senior Lane Genkinger added 10 points, nine boards and three steals to help the Wolves raise their record to 9-3 in the Super Conference North and 9-6 overall.
The loss drops Highland to 1-12, including a 1-10 mark in league play. While both squads for the Huskies next play tomorrow at Wapello, both WMU teams will host Columbus tomorrow evening.
