The Winfield-Mount Union Wolves swept a Southeast Iowa Super Conference doubleheader with the Columbus Wildcats on the basketball court Friday night.

The WMU girls grabbed a 12-11 lead by the end of the first quarter, and ever after Columbus went into halftime up two points, Winfield-Mount Union flipped the game back in their favor going into the final period and held on to win 53-50.

Freshman Kynlee Buffington scored 18 points to lead the Wolves, while junior Kellee Milks added a career-high 16 points as WMU wins just its second conference game of the season and third of the season overall.

Senior Lily Coil had a game-high 22 points for Columbus to go with nine rebounds and five steals, while junior Isabel Rendon finished with 19 points, nine rebounds and four steals, but it was not quite enough to keep the Wildcats from falling to 11-2 in the Super Conference North and 14-3 overall.

Winfield-Mount Union built on their early one-point advantage in the boys’ game with a 15-8 run to close out the first half leading 25-17. They would take further control of the game with an 18-8 run to start the third quarter, and Columbus could never catch up in a 63-34 victory for WMU.
