Sigourney-Keota boys’ wrestling had a stellar Saturday at the North Tama Redhawk Invitational, finishing second in the team standing at only six points shy of champion Riceville.

Dillion Menke helped lead SK to a great weekend by winning the championship at 144 pounds. The freshman won all five of his bouts, three by fall and one by a 14-2 major decision, while senior teammate Dylan Weber took third in that same weight class.

Jacob Libe also won a title for Sigourney-Keota at 157 lbs, pinning his first two opponents before winning by technical fall in the finals, while fellow junior Owen Menke built on a pin in the semifinals at 285 by winning a 7-0 decision in the finals to claim the crown.

Jayden Thompson was the runner-up at 190 for SK and fellow senior Ashton Schwab finished in third place at 165. Brady Clark took fifth at 150, as did fellow senior Kaden Kopp at 175 and junior Gavin Khali at 132, while freshman Paxton Wehr and senior Dawson Meyer were sixth at 113 and 138, respectively.

Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union hosted a duals tournament over the weekend and finished third. The Wildcats defeated North Linn 51-27 and North Scott 45-28, and while they would lose 36-27 to Southeast Polk and 45-31 to West Liberty, they would beat Tipton 39-33.

Columbus/WMU was paced by Markel Zapiensz, who won all five bouts he wrestled at 215 lbs, including three pins and a 4-1 sudden victory in overtime. Fellow senior Riley Kaalberg picked up four pins at 165, while junior Bowen Thomson won three times by fall at 132 and also picked up a 17-9 major decision.

In addition to a pin at 190 lbs, junior Trevor Phillips won an 11-0 major decision for the Wildcats and claimed two other decision finals. Jacob Nelson added a pin at 120 to victorious decisions of 3-1, 6-1 and 6-0, while fellow senior Itai Zapiensz had a pin and a 3-1 decision at 285.

Freshman Dakota Aney won twice by pin at 106 lbs, while Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union also got pins to win from freshman Dante Orozco at 126 and junior Kason Dopler at 175.
