The Lone Tree Lady Lion and Columbus Wildcat girls basketball teams competed for Superconference silver and gold honors Saturday at Loren Walker Arena on the campus of Southeastern Community College in West Burlington, with Lone Tree toppling the Danville Lady Bears for second and Columbus falling to Mediapolis in the championship game.

The second seed game was up first, and it was Lone Tree with the early advantage after the first frame 10-6. They would add onto their first quarter lead to make the score 19-8 at the half with a 9-2 second quarter run that spanned all eight minutes. The Lady Lions again added onto their lead going into the fourth with their highest scoring quarter of the game behind 11 Cate Sexton points in the third period alone. A 22-point lead was all Lone Tree needed to get to the finish line, taking home second place honors in the Superconference by a final of 50-26.

Unofficially, Danville won the glass by one, but Lone Tree committed six fewer turnovers. Washington County Hospital and Clinics Player of the Game for the Lady Lions, Cate Sexton, was the game-high scorer with 21 points. Sexton joined KCII Sports postgame to talk about the win. “It feels pretty good. It’s a good title to have your senior year. We’ve had really good practices this whole week. We’ve been training for this game. I think we came out as a team on fire. We wanted the win,” Sexton said.

Danville was led by Alaina Gourley’s 15 points off the bench.

In the championship game, Columbus was not as fortunate as their North Division counterparts in Lone Tree, falling victim to Mediapolis by a final of 66-12. The Bullette blitz was on early with a tough full-court press that plagued the ‘Cats throughout the game.

Unofficially, Mepo took both the battle on the glass and turnovers, led by Ellah Wagenbach’s 22 points, which included six three-pointers. Columbus was led by five points from senior Lily Coil.

Both teams are now off until regional action begins. Lone Tree will host Cedar Valley Christian on the 13th, while Columbus will host either West Burlington or West Branch on the 18th. The KCII Area Game of the Week will pick back up tonight with a regular season non-conference boys matchup in Riverside between the Keota Eagles and the home Highland Huskies.
