Southeast Iowa was well represented at the 2025 Class 1A Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union State Wrestling Championships at Xtream Arena in Coralville Thursday and Friday.
Sigourney-Keota senior Reanah Utterback wrapped up her decorated career on the mat by claiming her third state championship, pinning her way through the tournament, including a championship bout fall over Erica Irvine of Don Bosco. Utterback spoke with KCII News during the tournament about her game plan and keys for success.
Utterback said, “(The experience is good), it’s normal for me to be here. This is what I like doing. It’s great to be out here wrestling. Most of my matches are about getting to my takedowns and ending with chicken wings.”
Mid-Prairie senior Ashlee Farrier made her way onto the podium, taking home a fifth place medal. Farrier finished her time in the black and gold with a fifth place match win by major decision over Jordan Buffum of Logan-Magnolia. Farrier joined KCII News at State in Coralville to talk about her tournament.
Farrier said, “I like the big tournaments. I always know my family is going to be on the side which is really helpful. Having that experience, third time here, it’s helpful. I hit an ankle pick into a pin and had a cradle in another match that they didn’t call so then I pinned her with a butcher. Coming back after losses is tough. I give myself 10 minutes to feel like ‘I really wanted that win, I’ve been training for it all year’, it helps me a lot to come back. You have to put your headphones back on after that and say ‘well, that never happened!'”
Other competitors from local schools included Mid-Prairie’s Gabby Gingerich and Layken Lee, Sigourney-Keota’s Kia Montgomery and Karlee Greiner and Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union’s Jada Moats.
