The Washington Police Department issued nearly eighty snow ban tickets and 24hr tow tags during and after Wednesday’s snow event. Police Chief Jim Lester shares this reminder to Washington residents the importance of moving vehicles off of the road during a snow event, “The whole intent of that process is to have the cars off the street so the plows can do their job, and if emergency vehicles need to travel down the roads that the roads are clear. And that they can do that safely; it is a public safety thing. Our City Council made some changes to the snow ban parking a few years ago, and we did our best, I thought, earlier this week to publicize this is what’s happening, you know to get ready for this. Each November we remind people that rely on street parking to put together a plan so that you are able to move your car from the street when you hear that the snow is coming. Unfortunately our message hasn’t reached everyone, and others don’t feel like they have a place that they can park. The officers are doing their best to respond to regular calls for service in addition to enforcing the ordinance.” There were 78 total citations issued by the Police Department. The snow ban ordinance states that from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., there is no on-street parking where the signs are posted. More winter weather is expected over the weekend for the area.
