The Washington Demons had their girls’ basketball season come to an end Saturday night with a 58-38 loss at Mediapolis in the Class 3A Region 1 quarterfinals.

Washington hung tough early, using a pair of three-point shots by junior Adalyn Long and freshman Reagan Miller to take a 14-6 lead early in the second quarter, but that’s when Mediapolis kicked into high gear.

The Bullettes finished the first half on a 19-3 run to lead 25-17, and while the Demons cut the deficit down to six going into the final period, they would close the game on a 19-5 run to put away the win. After the game, Washington head coach Shannon Rugg told KCII Sports that his team once again gave it their all.

“[I am] proud of the girls that they [came] out and competed and did everything they could,” Rugg said. “Everybody bought in to their roles on this team, and [I am] just super proud of them.”

Long scored a game-high 21 points to lead the Demons, who finish the season with a record of 6-16. Washington will lose three seniors off the roster to graduation, including Rachel Sands and Kendall and Lauren Hinrichsen.
