The WACO Warriors open the boys’ basketball playoffs tonight by hosting Danville, and you can catch the first-round game in Class 1A Substate 4 on KCII.
WACO enters the postseason with a record of 17-5, splitting the title in the North division of the Southeast Iowa Super Conference with Hillcrest Academy for their second conference championship in the last three seasons.
Junior Christian Stacy has been a big part of the Warriors’ success, scoring a team-high 19-and-a-half points per game and also putting up nearly 6.5 rebounds, three assists and three steals per contest.
Senior Isaac Rich has also been a steady presence at the guard spot with nearly nine points and three assists a game, while sophomore Holden Hughes makes plays in the post with nearly 8.5 points and five rebounds per game. WACO head coach Chayse Roth tells KCII Sports he has a deep team with a lot of energy and stamina.
“We try to play eight or nine guys if we can,” Roth says. “We really try to rotate some guys in to keep people fresh [and] try and wear teams down that way. Once we get into that third and fourth quarter, that fatigue starts to show, and then we really start making our move.”
The Warriors are getting set to meet a Danville team that has a 9-13 record, but the Bears have been a tough bunch to beat, with six losses by 11 points or fewer.
Senior Jaden Bauer leads the team with nearly 14 points and eight rebounds per game, while sophomore Connor Hulett scores almost 12 points a game and hits over 33 percent of his three-point attempts.
You can hear all the action as the high school basketball playoffs continue on KCII with WACO taking on Danville on 106.1 FM and streaming on KCIIradio.com and the KCII app, starting with pregame coverage this evening at 6:30.
