A Washington man was arrested on a U.S. Marshals warrant. According to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, at 2:12 p.m. on Friday a deputy conducted a search warrant in the 1000 block of West Madison Street in Washington. Authorities arrested 63-year-old David J. Butterbaugh on the warrant for probation violation on the original charge of synthetic narcotic bond. He was taken to the Washington County Jail and transferred to another agency.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office Southern District of Iowa, in 2012 Butterbaugh was sentenced to 17.5 years in prison followed by five years of supervised release after pleading guilty to conspiracy to manufacture and distribute methamphetamine. Also, Timothy Kukowski was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

The methamphetamine was manufactured in Butterbaugh’s Washington residence. The judge found that the manufacture of methamphetamine in this case created “a substantial risk of harm to human life and the environment.”

The case was investigated by the Washington-Louisa County Drug Task Enforcement, including the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, the Washington County Sheriff’s Department, Washington Police Department, Louisa County Sheriff’s Department, Columbus Junction Police Department, and the Des Moines County Sheriff’s Department.
