The Highland Huskies are nearly off and running in a new boys’ track and field season. Highland features a lot of returning talent like seniors Brixton Rust and Cayden Day, who helped the 4-by-100-meter relay team win a medal at last year’s Southeast Iowa Super Conference Championships.

Junior Elvin Hernandez was also part of that relay squad and will be one of many sprinters that the Huskies count on. Head coach Logan Moeller tells KCII Sports that his group didn’t have a ton of experience last season, so they look and sound a lot more comfortable this spring.

“It’s definitely noticeable, from the get-go, with how they’re going about just approaching day-to-day activities,” Moeller says. “They’re turning to the incoming freshman and they’re setting the example [and] setting the bar high for them, too. It just helps the program [and] it just helps make my job a little bit easier.”

The first outdoor meet of the boys’ track and field season for Highland is the Columbus Invitational this Monday at Louisa-Muscatine.
