This week is prom at Mid-Prairie High School. District staff, students, and local agencies participated in a simulated crash exercise on campus Monday to remind event-goers of the importance of their safety and choices. According to a statement issued by high school principal Chuck Banks, all students at the high school attended the assembly, centered around the real-life consequences of distracted driving, driving under the influence, and other dangerous behaviors. The event featured members of the student body participating in a simulated two-vehicle incident, orchestrated by local authorities. Following the event, students Quinn Callahan, Grace Puttmann, Landry Gingerich and Dakota Mitchell, spoke with KCII news about what they hope their classmates took away

Puttmann said, “I think that if this has enough impact to help one person pay more attention while they’re driving then that’s worth it for us. I think it’s impactful to see a lot of the different elements of what happens when a crash happens and you aren’t being safe.”

Mitchell continued, “Just being involved in this, every time I get in a car I’ll think about it. If this saves one person’s life, it’s a good thing! I hope the student body takes a lot from it and remembers this.”

Gingerich and Callahan added, “Instead of just telling them about what could happen. They can see an example in person. If it helps one person it’s wroth it!”

Participating with the district were Wellman Ambulance, Wellman Fire Department, Washington County Ambulance, University of Iowa AirCare, Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa State Patrol, Washington County Dispatch, Bulltown Towing, Powell Funeral Home, Iowa Department of Transportation, University of Iowa Hospitals, and KCII Radio. Mid-Prairie’s prom is Saturday, April 26th.
