To be the best you have to beat the best. The Mid-Prairie baseball team has that opportunity tonight when they take the field in Eddyville-Blakesburg. The Golden Hawks will match up against #1 Davis County in the second round of district play. The Mustangs are 38-1 on the season entering the contest after receiving a bye in the first round. Mid-Prairie has been hot winning 15 of their last 20 games including a first round district romp Saturday night when they defeated Cardinal of Eldon 12-0. The Golden Hawks ended the game early, taking just five innings led by a hot swinging, aggressive offense and a two hit complete game shut out from starting pitcher Jonas Coblentz. With the rest since Saturday all hands will be on deck and available for Mid-Prairie against the Mustangs. Coach Ryan Koller is familiar with the Mustangs and knows what his team will be up against tonight.

“It’s no secret who [Davis County is] or what they’ve done, State Champions last year and 38-1 this year,” Koller said. “It is a pretty storied past couple of years from who they have in their lineup. The arms they have the bats they have, it is definitely going to be a challenge

Though beating Davis County is a tough task Koller notes there are some places where he feels Mid-Prairie can take advantage in their game plan.

“We have to continue to play defense, we know they’re going to put the ball in play. It is okay if we let them hit the ball, we just have to be able to make the plays,” Koller said. “That is something that we’ve been able to to, and we have to throw strikes. It is the same reason we had a great finish to the year, it’s throwing strikes, playing great defense and you have to put some runs on the board.”
