Governor Terry Branstad has signed a proclamation that will temporarily help farmers impacted by the drought. A weight limit lift has been issued for 60 days and is aimed specifically at the transporting of hay, straw and stover. Washington County Engineer Jacob Thorius says farmers transporting these items can now carry up to 12.5% over the legal load limit with the axle weight limit remaining at 20,000 pounds.
The proclamation directs the Iowa Department of Transportation to monitor the temporary lift on all Iowa roads except interstates. Thorius says the proclamation should be a reminder to drivers about being aware of slower moving vehicles. The weight exemption which started yesterday is good for 60 days.
